Hello and Happy (belated) July 4th.
The iPhone is now officially released. It has been all over the news, but the best story, hands down, is the iPhone musical by David Pogue of the New York Times. After you’ve had a good chuckle, check out our commentary in our weekly tHAWT series. While some couldn’t wait to get their hands on the iPhone, others couldn’t wait to take it apart to see what companies’ parts were used in the phone. Apparently, this was one of Apple’s most closely guarded secrets.
And while many were waiting in line for their iPhone, we at Hill Associates were busy with new development and updates to our vast library of material. Our wiki continues to grow, and new ExperTechs have been released. Our partners are looking to us to customize content for them.
Call me and let’s discuss how we can work together to enhance your programs.

Happy Birthday! The ATM turns 40
Hard to believe that the ATM is 40 years old! This invention has drastically changed our lives. Does anyone still go to the bank to cash a check? Does anyone still use traveler’s checks? Every day, ATMs dispense an estimated $26B from one of 1.5 million machines worldwide, and they handle 165 million total transactions. Check out stories from NPR and CNN to find out more about the first ATM and its inventor.
Don’t settle for the real Job(s)
If you are getting tired of the iPhone hype and want a different perspective on the Apple way of thinking, check out Fake Steve Jobs. While the humor on this site is not for everyone, a CNET News.com article notes that fake Steve Jobs was recently voted the 41st most influential person in business, in a survey conducted by Business 2.0.
Did you take your medicine? Your kids are watching you!
Caregivers and baby boomers are relying more and more on technology to monitor their aging parents remotely, according to a CNET News.com report. Sensors, webcams, GPS devices, and electronic pendants and bracelets give seniors a sense of independence and give their children and caregivers peace of mind.

Analysis
The telecom industry is thriving
It’s been seven long years since the great bubble burst. But, thanks to all those videos whizzing around the Internet, telecom has now gone viral, according to this article in Business Week. Private equity dollars are racing into the market. Pipes that were half-used in 2002 have now doubled in size, and are down to just 30 percent unused. Things are looking better!
Love him or loathe him—Bill Gates’ impact
A recent Information Week article asked this question: Is Bill Gates the titan of the industry or the tyrant? Read the articles and decide for yourself. Also, take a look at this timeline of Bill’s legacy in the industry.
What’s up with the U.S. cellular carriers?
It often seems that in the U.S., cell phones are designed for the carriers, not the users. David Pogue, technology columnist for the New York Times, recently returned from the cellular industry conference in Lake Como, Italy. Sadly, not one U.S. carrier was there! Pogue’s comments on the conference and the industry are worth the read.

The 2007 InfoSec year in review
Mich Kabay, Ph.D., CISSP-ISSMP, Associate Professor of Information Assurance and CTO of the School of Graduate Studies at Norwich University in Northfield, VT (about an hour from our corporate headquarters) has published his annual compendium of all things Information Security. This 450 page tome is available to his graduate students but you can link to it as an addition to the newest ExperTech on the same topic. (See below)
Comcast commits to the DOCSIS 3.0 proposal
In a push towards a 100 Mbps “wideband cable-modem service,” based on DOCSIS 3.0 standards, Comcast’s relatively new CTO, Tony Werner, indicates that Comcast wants to lead the push toward more is better. There will be challenges, such as finding three additional 6 MHz channels. Four channels are required to attain 160 Mbps downstream connections, which are needed to bond several channels together to act as one virtual pipe. However, Werner says this will be the natural evolution of things to come.
The new widget
Widgets are handy applications that deliver your favorite information to your desktop or mobile. At a glance, get your weather, the time of your next appointment, the time in another country, or your team’s current score. Just imagine what widgets can offer to mobile users—access to their favorite Web information (and automatically updated)—delivered straight to their cell phones!
Yahoo now offers thousands of widgets for MAC and Windows platforms. There are several platforms, including ZenZui, which looks and feels similar to the iPhone; Alltel’s Celltop; Openwave’s MIDAS, which makes the widgets part of the idle screen; QUALCOMM’s uiOne; and WidSets, which spawned from the Nokia ventures organization.
