Hill Associates Telecom Newsletter

Hello!

Another month has passed, the leaves are starting to turn, and Halloween is right around the corner. Where has the year gone?

It should be a fascinating end of year march (or perhaps race) to the finish line. I am curious to see what the third quarter numbers show for our friends in the telecom space. Mergers and acquisitions continue to happen, cable and traditional providers continue to look for new ways to grow their business, and wireless and content remain the winners. (Check out my recent white paper on mobility, below.) It is a busy and exciting time in the industry!

Top 25 trends
USAToday has composed several Top 25 lists to celebrate its 25th anniversary. We especially enjoyed the Top 25 trends that changed the way we travel and the Top 25 trends that changed the Internet.

Second Life mirrors real life?
We have written about the online fantasy world of Second Life in our blog as well as discussing it in tHAWT episodes 41 and 47. Now an article from the New York Times suggests that we want the same from Second Life that we want from real life—stuff and more stuff. If you are feeling a bit strapped for cash in Second Life, not to worry, Singapore start-up First Meta has created the first virtual credit card. Check it out!

How not to use PowerPoint
Most of you are very familiar with PowerPoint and how to use it—maybe all too familiar. But do you know how not to use it? Learn how in comedian Don McMillan’s video—very entertaining indeed!

The best sites for video sharing
Posting video is so yesterday. Video sharing is what’s hot today. Check out Light Reading’s list of the Top 10 video sharing websites. AT&T’s remote monitoring live video sharing service is also geared to this space—without the website.

Industry Analysis

New security reports are out
The latest reports from the Computer Security Institute and CIO Magazine confirm what we at Hill Associates have been saying—that the single biggest security threat faced by corporate networks doesn’t come from virus writers or hackers; it comes from company insiders. Almost half of the survey respondents still admit to not knowing enough about security in their own enterprises! All the more reason to come to us for help. Our Security ExperTech is a quick, convenient way to get more information.

A mobile for a Kenyan farmer?
Why would a Kenyan farmer need a mobile phone? To improve his business, of course! Basic cellular services are rapidly changing the economic conditions of emerging nations in Africa. There are 3 billion worldwide mobile subscribers today, and that is expected to grow to 5 billion by 2015. That’s two-thirds of the world’s expected population in 2015!

Building a resilient enterprise
Business continuance and disaster recovery have been constant themes for us this year. While today’s systems are better than ever, the demands on those systems grow more and more as the amount of data grows. CIO and CSO, with underwriting from Sungard, offer resources to help companies address these issues. An online interactive guide helps companies create their own BC/DR plans. Finally, our own white paper discusses storage networking’s role in BC/DR planning.

Tech Talk

Fiber to the home
No one ever wants less bandwidth. And with interest in fiber to the home increasing, Cisco has a new white paper that discusses optical networking options: passive optical networking (PON), Gigabit Ethernet PON (GPON), or broadband PON (BPON). Also check out our podcasts and wiki entries on fiber to the node.

Going mobile?
We have just published a new white paper on mobility. The paper examines wireless from the PAN, LAN, MAN, and WAN perspective. The paper also discusses the technologies used in contemporary mobile telephone systems, which we discuss in two podcasts. The first podcast explores UMTS and cdma2000, paying particular attention to base technology and the implementation differences. The second podcast discusses issues related to mobile computing. Enjoy!

Storage “nanoislands”
No one claims that they have too much storage! But what happens when we run out of capacity on our two-dimensional hard drives? 3D holographic storage and atomic storage are in the works. And, this IEEE article discusses polarizing 100-atom iron nanoislands, which would take up only one six-hundredth the area of a magnetic bit. Wow, that’s small!
