Hello!
Spring has finally sprung here in Vermont, as we know from the recent “ice out” at Joe’s Pond. This year, four people will split the prize money. Never heard of an ice out? Read all about it here.
Our creative juices are also flowing, and we are in the midst of creating some new ExperTechs – this time on IPv6, another topic you have expressed interest in. Thanks also for your ideas for tHAWT and PodSnacks.
Finally, everyone wants to know their value in the workplace. Do you have any of the 10 IT skills most in demand, or do you have some of the five IT skills not in demand? (Ah, how I long for those X.25 days again.)
Until next month,

Politics and the Blackberry generation
Technological advances impact all areas—even politics. Consider that in 1936, FDR gauged public opinion by placing a call once a week to an advisor! Read more about technology and the race to the White House here.
Visualizing the YouTube hijack
All you techies out there, this is for you. (Everyone else skip to the next blurb!)
This past February, the YouTube site appeared to be hijacked (not hacked). To see a cool animation of what happened, look at the analysis the RIPE NCC did using its routing information service (RIS). The RIS collects BGP announcements from approximately 600 peers across 16 Internet exchange points and then archives this information. RIPE NCC has taken this information and animated how the unauthorized announcement from Pakistan—to its upstream provider PCCW—propagated.
Where have all the geek girls gone?
Apparently not to computer science college courses. Enrollments are way down, and experts are trying to figure out what to do about it. If you are lucky enough to find a geek girl, be sure to practice proper techie etiquette to win her over.

The trend in the end-user security industry
End-users buy technology and solutions that are useful to the business, and they want them to be secure. The complexity of the security industry is leaving end-users baffled, as most are not IT security experts. They have no clue what the newest products actually do, and therefore, they’re not buying them! Bottom line, end-users want providers to take care of security. What will happen in the future? Read more here.
Ten security threats to watch for
Speaking of security, it remains a top “to do” for this year. What are the top security threats to look for going forward? This list includes public websites and mobile devices—things we use every day! Learn how to protect yourself.
