Hill Associates Telecom Newsletter

Hello!

Is it really June already? Temperatures are rising, the kids are getting out of school, and everyone’s thinking about summer vacations. Hope your summer is off to a great start!

At Hill Associates, we are constantly examining the implications of technological change. This article notes that today, it’s the information that matters, not the data itself. The effect technology can have on businesses, and how they manage that technology, rings especially true in today’s tough economic times.

In other news, it was nice to see our friends in Australia recognize our PodSnacks! We thank them also for the YouTube link regarding Hedy Lemarr’s importance to the wireless world of today.

Watch for new ExperTech titles coming out this month. See you in July!

In-body sensors can aid in medical diagnoses
The future of medicine could include on-body monitors—wearable devices with sensors that would send vital information like blood pressure from patients to doctors via wireless technology. Check out how diabetes patients can use wireless technology to monitor the disease.

Industry Analysis

Going green
The cost to power servers is going up, way up. The EPA has estimated that data power requirements will double by 2011. So, green computing has a definite financial impact to businesses today. Check out our recent podcast on the subject and the Green Grid for more expert advice. It’s no wonder that more and more companies are looking to managed data center services to reduce their total cost of operations.

Mobile phones more important than wallets
Are you a hyperconnected individual – do you have more than seven devices that allow you to feel connected with the outside world? According to a recent survey, 38 percent of 2300 people surveyed would choose their mobile phone over their wallet, keys, MP3 player, or computer if they had to leave home for 24 hours and were allowed to take only one item. Given the capability of these smart devices and the growth of the market, this comes as no surprise.

Hanging up on wired landlines
During its semiannual national health interview survey, the CDC discovered that an amazing three of every 10 U.S. households (28.9 percent) rely on mobile phones exclusively. OUCH for the telcos!!

Tech Talk

Fibre Channel over Ethernet coming to a SAN near you
Fibre Channel has dominated the storage area network (SAN) world and Ethernet has dominated everything else. Why not combine the two for maximum cost and performance efficiency in the data center? Enter Fibre Channel over Ethernet. Check out this article for more on the differences between Fibre Channel and iSCSI, and for storage basics, get our ET 2.0 on Storage Fundamentals.

What is this thing called cloud computing?
It’s one of the newest tech buzzwords, but many experts avoid precise definitions, including HP’s chief strategy officer Shane Robison. Check out this video taken at the recent Web 2.0 Expo in which experts like Tim O’Reilly and Dan Farber give their “definitions” of cloud computing.

Virtualization and embedded security will become critical for business success
You’ve probably heard the expression, “Anything after the word ‘virtual’ is a lie.” However, now virtualization can change everything for a business. Virtualization is becoming strategic, but adding it to a network infrastructure creates new security challenges. Make sure you know the impacts and tools that can help.

What You Need to Know about Data Deduplication – NOW!
Data deduplication is key to data backup. It will save valuable tiered storage space, achieve faster backups, and reduce power requirements in support of green computing. What do you need to know now? What should be on your deduplication checklist?
