Hello again!

Yes, it's August already, but perhaps you are still looking for that unique summer vacation idea. We offer you this list of ideas for the geek in all of us.

This month's newsletter touches on a wide variety of topics, such as new regulatory compliance rules, the iPhone/Android debate, SIP trunking, the state of broadband expansion in the U.S., and voice over LTE. There's a little something for everybody here.

Enjoy the summer,

The future of television is perhaps not on TV
People around the globe tuned in to the World Cup last month. But not everybody followed it on TV.

New HITECH rules add teeth to HIPAA
HIPAA legislation has been in effect for five years, and most people are familiar with it. But now there's more. A new 864-page final ruling called The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) guidelines and a 228-page companion document on standards for EHR security will add significantly to the requirements. Remember that regulatory compliance is the #1 driver for security spending today. Also check out this analysis of the new regulations.

The Battle Royale? Apple vs. Google
Perhaps some objectivity might help in the iPhone/Android discussion. Is it about search and leads, or apps? Should Google's new Android 2.2 OS make Apple nervous? Will the Android X lead to Google's success in the mobile space?

Will the rise in M2M drive WiMAX growth?
Humans have different wireless needs from machines. For example, consumers are quickly upgrading to 3G to take advantage of more bandwidth-intensive apps, while most machine-to-machine (M2M) services (e.g., video surveillance) work fine with 2.5G. However, M2M connections are expected to triple by 2014, and a recent analysis says that M2M users are willing to pay for superior connectivity.

The state of broadband in the U.S.
Not everyone is convinced that the FCC's planned changes to broadband connectivity are all positive. Yet expansion is especially important to the rural areas, which are lagging behind the rest of the country. Here is a look at the current state of affairs.

The transition to packet voice
There is no question that packet-based voice will ultimately displace TDM-based voice services. Here is a look at what to expect in the next-generation voice services. (Check out the tech article below for a review of voice over LTE.)

Mid-year storage trends

It is time once again to look into the crystal ball to see what is up and coming for the rest of the year in the world of storage. This report should shed some light on the trends.

Technical update on WiGig
In our June newsletter, we noted that there was a new specification called WiGig that will complement Wi-Fi. A new video details the implications of the 60 GHz spectrum, the difference between WiGig and other standards, and how WiGig will affect wireless LANs in the future.

SIP trunking
People often confuse products and technology. Consider Session Initiation Protocol, or SIP. SIP is not a product. It's a protocol, and therefore a technology. However, some providers sell SIP trunks. Check out this primer on SIP trunking.

An introduction to voice over LTE
4G long term evolution (LTE) mobile services are often in the news these days, so it is worth taking some time to review the means by which voice will be carried over our next generation mobile data services platform.
